It has been more than 60 years in the making. The last Northwestern national championship was captured in 1941 by the men's fencing team. With an undefeated record heading into the post season, the women's lacrosse team was primed for glory.

But even with the coach of the year, Kelly Amonte-Hiller guiding them to the Final Four, the 'Cats found plenty of doubters in Annapolis, Maryland. There were questions about their soft schedule. There were questions about their inexperience. There were even questions about Northwestern's geographic location.

By sunday night the questions were answered. With an impressive 13-10 victory over the defending champion Virginia Cavaliers, the 'Cats became the first Northwestern team since the Roosevelt administration to win a national title..
