It's the final push towards Dance Marathon--have you raised your 800 dollars yet? The gentleman of Zeta Beta Tau have!
“We have a really good process, it's kind of almost like a machine. We wanted to do what's worked for us in the past," said Todd Siegel, ZBT’s co-philanthropy chair.
That means canning virtually non-stop, especially in this final countdown to DM.
ZBT is defending its title of DM’s top contributor, a title it has had for over 30 straight years.
“We have a long tradition of being the top earner at Dance Marathon and the freshmen are really trying to keep that going through canning and everything. It's been great so far,” said Dan DeSalva, a ZBT freshman.
Many freshmen have gone canning over ten times since they pledged in mid-January. Though it is a requirement, they said have fun doing it.
“I love canning. I wake up every Saturday morning, sometimes Sundays, and I go ‘I wonder how much I'm going to get today,’” DeSalva said.
ZBT senior Jeff Weishaar has gone canning multiple times this week to boost his total. He and his DM partner are trying to win “Top Canner.” So far they've raised over $5000.
“I have been out canning more than I'd like to admit. I've been out for about four shifts a weekend,” Weishaar said.
But now that it is coming down to crunch time the canning norm has changed.
“We're seeing a lot of people doing multiple shifts, getting ready to go out because they really want to do that final push,” said Scott Winston, ZBT co-philanthropy chair.
So will the kings of canning emerge victorious?.
“We're keeping our title this year. We're keeping our title and the next four years and that is a guarantee,” said DeSalva.
