The Northwestern Wildcats roll into West Lafayette to face the Purdue Boilermakers and to avoid a 0-2 start in Big Ten play. A first play fumble by Arby Fields left the Wildcats trailing 7-0 after a 24 yard Joey Elliot touchdown pass to Keith Smith, capping a 34 yard drive. While Northwestern’s passing offense has looked steady, a lack of run support from the Wildcat’s backfield has left Northwestern with only three points at the end of the quarter. A combination of Purdue’s air attack and the Wildcat’s missed tackles has Coach Fitzgerald and the Northwestern faithful shaking their heads yet again, with Northwestern trailing 14-3 after the 1st quarter.
