Coming into Saturday’s doubleheader, Northwestern’s baseball team hadn’t won in nearly three weeks.
Michigan, on the other hand, needed a couple of wins just to have a shot at the Big Ten Tournament.
But Northwestern on Senior Day came up big, posting two victories and winning their first Big Ten series of the season.
“We sent Michigan home packing,” said freshman Paul Snieder. “They aren’t going to the Big Ten Tournament now, and over the past few years they’ve been dominating the Big Ten. So that’s pretty huge; we feel really accomplished by doing that.”
“You know, it’s kind of like, the whole year we’ve been battling. Injuries, one-run games, it’s just been a long season, and we were trying to keep Michigan out of the postseason,” said senior Tony Vercelli. “It was icing on the cake to win, but even better to have a walk-off. It was a fun day. I think everyone’s happy, and I think the seniors are pretty elated to go out with a two game sweep.”
Fellow senior Tommy Finn had this to say: “I think next year they will have learned from this, and hopefully we as seniors did our part in relaying the message to them that you know, you never give in and you just gotta keep playing because it goes by too fast."
