Northwestern’s Jewish Theater Ensemble (JTE) is bringing the popular stories of Dr. Seuss to life. Their production of “Seussical the Musical” opens this weekend—with work still to be done. The live orchestra must be tuned. The cast has to warm up their voices, and the lighting needs to be hung.
“We’re still putting it together because it’s kind of in a process,” Johnson Brock said, who plays the Cat in the Hat in the show.
But as Brock explains, that’s not stopping JTE from pulling it all together. “Seussical” brings in characters from some of Dr. Seuss’ most well-known stories. Perhaps the most famous character, the Cat in the Hat, is the show’s narrator. Brock considers himself pretty lucky to play this iconic part.
“It’s my job to get the audience excited about the show and get the cast connected with the audience,” Brock said.
JTE follows a quote each season. This time, it’s, “The purpose of freedom is to create it for others.” And the show’s director Madeline Scheffler said that freedom comes in the form of fun.
“The most fun thing for me,” Scheffler said, “is getting to watch college students play and have fun and laugh and joke around and create these amazing, wonderful characters and stories.”
Hopefully, a page won’t turn without you seeing “Seussical.” Even if you are a Grinch or a Sour Kangaroo, you’ll leave the show with a smile.
To purchase tickets for the show, you can buy them at the Norris Student Center box office or at the door.
